Uncover the historic "Pact of 1861" legend tied to Comte de Monte-Carlo
In 1861, the Principality of Monaco, led by Prince Charles III, was at a critical juncture. Facing popular uprisings in Menton and Roquebrune, the Principality was on the brink of crisis, risking the loss of these key territories.
These cities, weary of heavy taxes imposed by Monaco, aspired to be annexed by France, placing Monaco in a precarious situation
In urgent negotiations under Napoleon III’s empire, Menton and Roquebrune became French, leaving Monaco financially weakened by this loss.
To save the Principality from financial collapse, Prince Charles III made a bold move in 1863, launching a casino at the time, a controversial decision.
This once-forbidden institution quickly became the heartbeat of Monaco’s revival, drawing the world’s elite to its glamorous halls. By 1869, Monaco abolished income taxes, further cementing its status as a haven for wealth, fame, and fortune.
Years later, Baron Christian Louis de Massy, son of Princess Antoinette of Monaco, Baroness de Massy, and international tennis champion Alexandre-Athenase Noghès, and grandson of Antony Noghès, creator of the famous Monaco Grand Prix, was inspired by the bold and ambitious spirit of his ancestor, Prince Charles III.
Just as the Prince transformed Monaco through his daring vision and resilience, turning a small principality into a global icon of glamour, Baron de Massy sought to capture that same spirit.
He founded Comte de Monte-Carlo Champagne as a tribute to Monaco’s courage, its relentless pursuit of excellence, and the bold legacy of the 1861 pact.
Today, under the leadership of Mr. Philippe Melliard, our house continues the Baron’s ambition.
Comte de Monte-Carlo Champagne stands as a symbol of Monaco’s values and timeless spirit, reminding us that every moment is a gift to be cherished and made memorable.
